Thermowell

A thermowell is a protective housing for temperature sensors such as thermocouples and resistance temperature detectors (RTDs). It is typically used in industrial applications where the sensor needs to be protected from harsh environments, high pressure, or corrosive substances.

Types of Thermowells:

  1. Threaded Thermowells: Screwed into a threaded process connection.
  2. Weld-In Thermowells: Welded directly to the process vessel or pipe.
  3. Flanged Thermowells: Attached to the process using a flange.
  4. Socket Weld Thermowells: Welded into a socket fitting on the process.

Design Considerations:

  • Material Compatibility: Ensuring the material of the thermowell is compatible with the process fluid.
  • Pressure and Temperature Ratings: Choosing a thermowell that can withstand the process pressure and temperature.
  • Insertion Length: The length of the thermowell must be sufficient to reach the desired measurement point.
  • Velocity Effects: High-velocity fluids can induce vibrations in the thermowell, potentially causing failure. Proper design can mitigate this.

Applications

  • Industrial Processes: Used in chemical plants, refineries, and power generation facilities.
  • HVAC Systems: Used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Food and Beverage: Used in processes where hygiene and cleanliness are critical.
